Thai Pongal,’ the thanksgiving or the festival of harvest was marked at the end of the harvest season and is one of the most important festivals, celebrated by Hindus in Sri Lanka together with their fellow-believers in the South Asia.
Troops of the 551 Infantry Brigade together with a gathering of Hindu devotees in the Vallipuram area celebrated ‘Thai Pongal’ at Vallipuram Alvar Kovil on 14 Jan 2022.
Brigadier Prasanna Gunaratne GOC - 55 Division participated as Chief Guest in the event of Thai Pongal celebration. Commanders of 551 and 553 Infantry Brigades, Senior Officers, Officers, other ranks and members of the general public of the Vallipuram area attended this religious event.
Further Brigadier Prasanna Gunarathne presented gifts to persons who supported to draw ‘Kolam’ in the Kovil premises and distributed ‘Pongal Rice’ among attendees after invoking blessings on the devotees.
