500 Mangrove Saplings Plant in Eve of International Forest Day

The 14th Battalion Gajaba Regiment launched a Tree Planting Campaign as one more phase of the ‘Thuru Mithuru Nawa Ratak’ project, introduced by General Shavendra Silva, Chief of the Defence Staff and the Commander of the Army, in order to increase the National Forest Cover and to beautify the country. This campaign was launched covering the lagoon front of 200m in Nawanthurai Lagoon, Jaffna on 21 March 2021.

The project was driven under the absolute supervision of the Commander Security Force Jaffna, Major General Priyantha Perera. The Commanding Officer, Officers and Other Ranks of 14th Battalion Gajaba Regiment, troops of 512 Brigade and civil authorities participated for this event.

Officials of Forest Department supported this event whole heartedly by allocating appropriate land areas and providing 500 Mangrove plants. Divisional Secretariat of Jaffna Mr.Samasivam Sudarshan, District Forest Officer Mr. Mahesh Senanayaka and Regional Forest Officer Mr. Nimal Weerakoon and Staff of the Forest Department also actively participated for the event.
