In honour of World Sight Day 2024, Teaching Hospital Jaffna’s Eye Unit, in collaboration with the Army Base Hospital- Palaly, launched a special cataract surgery program from 14 to 25 October 2024. Through this initiative, over 2,000 high - quality, free cataract surgeries were performed for selected patients from rural areas in the Northern Province, significantly improving accessibility to vital eye care services in the region.
Led by five consultant eye surgeons, including Dr. M. Malaravan, the programme was supported by dedicated medical officers and health staff from the Army Base Hospital - Palaly, whose commitment was crucial to achieving the program's impact.
The programme’s closing ceremony on October 25 welcomed Hon. N. Vethanayagam, Governor of the Northern Province, as the chief guest. In his address, he commended the collaborative efforts and the contributions of the Army Base Hospital- Palaly’s medical team. Also in attendance were the Director of Teaching Hospital-Jaffna, the Regional Director of Health Services-Jaffna, and other officials who celebrated the success of this impactful healthcare initiative.
