Independence Day is one of the special national festivals of Sri Lanka which is meant to commemorate the country’s independence from British rule in 1948. This triumphant day is celebrated through flag-hoisting ceremony, cultural dances, parades and performances.
The main ceremony of the National Independence Day celebrations were held on 04th February 2023 at Colins Ground, Nelliaddy with the participation of distinguished invitees representing the government, religious dignitaries, school children and civilians. Troops of Security Forces (Jaffna) in collaboration with civil population showcased the day’s importance along the esplanade mainly in the Jaffna city and in Point Pedro, Kodikamam, Kankasanthurai and Chavakachcheri amidst sabotage activities, economic constraints and varying multifaceted global constraints.
The celebration on Saturday was condemned by many activists and, troops were subjected to continuous blistering criticism. University students, trade unionists and activists in Jaffna held a black flag protest and were rallying through the town condemning the government’s independence celebration.
Despite the criticism, this year’s commemorative celebration leaves a landmark as it had all the symbols of dignity with simplicity, brevity and colourfulness due to participation of large number of civilians over 15,000. Troops of Security Forces (Jaffna) added the true meaning to the day’s significance and re-affirmed the commitment of troops strengthening the reconciliation process and the participation of Tamil communality bore testimony to their effort.
