Troops of 551 Infantry Brigade are Actvely Involyed in Beach Cleaning with Local Governtment Authoriy

Troops of 551 Infantry Brigade launched a beach cleaning programme in coastal areas of brigade area of responsible littered with discarded wrappers, polythene, plastic bottles, empty beer cans, empty liquor bottles, etc.

These beach cleaning programme was organized under the guidance of Major General Prasanna Gunaratne, General Officer Commanding - 55 Infantry Division and under the supervision of Brigadier Jude Kariyakarawana, Commander - 551 Infantry Brigade with a view to creating an attitudinal awakening of the general public and make them recognize the value of coastal and marine resources while attracting community contribution for beach cleanup efforts.

Accordingly, the troops of 551 Infantry Brigade, 4 Sri Lanka singha Regiment and 16 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry Battalian in coordination with Point Pedro Divisional Secretary office, Point Pedro Urban Council and Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management conducted a beach clearing programme on 17 March at Munai, Point Pedro, Supermadam and Sakkotai coastal areas with the support of the Police and Sri Lanka Navy.

More than 500 local residents attended the event, including Rev Fr Antony Fernando Bennet, Mr Navaratnarajah, Chairman Point Pedro Urban Council, Mr Alvaipillai Siri, Divisional Secretary Point Pedro, Representative from Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, and Chairmans of the local fishing societies. Beach cleaning project successfully completed with the appreciations of Government officials and local community of the area.
