Tamil Thai Pongal Day is a Tamil and Hindu harvest festival designed to give thanks to the sun god. Traditionally, it is the festival of farmers who depend on mother earth, the sun, rain, other natural elements, cows and buffaloes for a bountiful harvest of their staple food, rice. Hence, after two years, Tamil community in Jaffna celebrated Thai Pongal - 2022, in grand level and the main celebration was held at the Nallur Kovil. Kovil authorities and the Government Agent – Jaffna, maid a request by seeking military assistance and Commander Security Forces, Jaffna, Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa given his concern and blessings to General Officer Commanding, 51 Division, Major General Chandana Wickramasinghe to coordinate the celebrations.
Along with the Kovil authorities and community leaders, troops of 51 Division coordinated the celebrations and leaders of all religious in Jaffna attended and blessed for the success of Hindu faith on this auspicious day.
Former Governor of Northern Province, Mr. Reginald Cooray grassed the ceremony as the Chief Guest and Government Agent of Jaffna, Mr. Kanapathipillai Mahesan, General Officer Commanding of the 51 Division, Major General Chandana Wickramasinghe, number of government and civil Hindu devotees participated for the colourful ceremony.
