Residents of the Point Pedro area staged a fervent protest holding placards on 14 August 2023, rallying against the impending disbandment of the Katkolam Army camp. The camp, operated by the 4th Sinha Regiment, is slated to be disbanded as part of a broader initiative aimed at returning land occupied by security forces to local residents.
The demonstration was held opposite the Army camp demanding not to remove the camp. A large number of residents in the area joined in the protest campaign. The residents of the area said that crimes in the area had minimized due to presence of Army at that area. Also they claimed that the troops were making a vital contribution in the rescue of the people during a disastrous situation.The protest stands as a demonstration of the community’s unity and determination to preserve what they perceive as a crucial safeguard against illegal activities in the region.
To emphasize their stance, protestors submitted a letter consisting of 150 signatures of residents addressing the matter to the Commander of the Army Camp. The letter is intended to be forwarded to the Army Commander, highlighting the community’s collective plea to retain the Katkolam army camp.
