The Security Forces (Jaffna) organised a traditional New Year Festival in simple and charmmannerto mark the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2024 at the Doraiappa Stadium, Jaffna on 10 April with the presence of large number of Army troops in Jaffna Peninsula and Tamil community of Jaffna, Point Pedro, Kilinochchi, Mulankavil and Pooneryn.
With the invitation of Major General MGWWWMCB Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc, the Commander Security Forces (Jaffna), dignitaries such as, Consulate General of India in Jaffna, Additional Secretary of Presidential Secretariat in Jaffna, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in Northern Province, Deputy Inspector General of Police in Jaffna, Overlooking District Secretary/ Government Agent of Jaffna, Overlooking District Secretary/ Government Agent of Kilinochchi, Secretary - Ministry of Education, Cultural Affairs, Sports and Youth Affairs of Norther Province, Chief Monk of Naga Viharaya, Chief Monk of Tissa Viharaya, Rev. Fathers and several other participated. Jaffna Commander and the other invitees lit the traditional oil lamp and inaugurate the festival.
Prominence of the festival was given for the traditional aesthetic events such as cycle races, marathons, selection of the Awurudu Kumari, grease pole climbing, tug of war, pillow fights, raban playing, fancy dress,Tamil Kolam designs and several fun making games. Tamil community enthusiastically participated and joined hands together with military to celebrate the event.
At the end of the New Year Festival, Jaffna Commander and several other invitees gave away gifts to the winners of different events/ competitions.
In the evening, a colourful musical show was commenced and continued until midnight giving ample opportunity for the participants to enjoy with new hope.
As per the direction of Jaffna Commander, the festival was organised by General Officer Commanding’s of 51, 52 and 55 Infantry Divisions with the collaboration of Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers and well-wishers in the Jaffna Peninsula.
