A newly constructed netball court at Kallaru Tamil College was ceremonially declared open on 27 August 2025, marking a significant step in promoting sports and youth development in the region.
The project was initiated under the vision of Major General W.M.A.B. Wijekoon, Commander of the 55 Infantry Division, and carried out under the guidance of Colonel M.P.J. Muthunayaka, Commander of the 553 Infantry Brigade. Responding to a request made by the Principal of Kallaru Tamil College, the construction was supervised by the Commanding Officer of the 14 Sri Lanka National Guard, whose troops completed the facility.
To celebrate the occasion, an exhibition netball match was played between Darmapuram National School and Murugananda Maha Vidyalaya. In further support of student sports development, the Army also donated sports equipment, including netball uniforms, to the school.
The event was organized by the Sri Lanka Army with the dual aim of fostering students’ athletic talents and strengthening cooperation and goodwill between the military and the local community.
Adding prestige to the ceremony, the District Secretary of Kilinochchi and the Divisional Secretary of Kandaweli attended as special guests. The donation of sports items was made possible through the generous financial contribution of a local philanthropist.
