Major General Priyantha Perera who had been the Commander Security Force (Jaffna) for six months, relinquished the appointment on 17 July 2021 to assume duties as Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army. During commanders speech offered his gratitude to All Ranks serving in respective formations for high standard of professionalism maintained during his tenure and committed service rendered to maintain a peaceful environment in Jaffna peninsula. On 18 July, he was extended a Guard of Honour at the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna by the troops of 17th Battalion of Gemunu Watch. Then, he attend to wreath laying ceremony for fallen war heroes at Palaly War Heroes’monument.
Before he is being appointed as the Commander Security Force - Jaffna on 19 January 2021, Major General Priyantha Perera served as Commander Security Force Wanni. He has held many responsible Command, Staff and Instructor appointments in the Army and has followed a number of local and foreign courses during his military career.
As the Commander Security Force - Jaffna, Major General Priyantha Perera has initiated number of measures to enhance security of Jaffna peninsula, which enabled strengthening the public confidence towards the Security Forces deployed while maintaining peaceful and stable environment for day to day life of the people of Jaffna.
The senior officer was recognized and commended by the community in Jaffna peninsula for the efforts made to uplift the living standards of deserving people and most social welfare projects. With the assistance of foreign and local well-wishers, he initiated necessary action to construct a large number of houses for poor people, distributed number of dry ration packs, wheelchairs for the deserving and distributed school stationery items for children. The under command troops were directed by him with synergic efforts to assist the civil community who were affected by disasters and other adverse conditions. Amidst supporting the civil community in Jaffna, the commander launched a number of programmes to felicitate the ex-servicemen in Jaffna District by facilitating them in many ways for their benefit in old ages, including supply of medicine to their door steps.
Besides social welfare projects, Major General Priyantha Perera promoted Sri Lanka Army as an environmental protection force by continuing a Coconut Planting Project, Mega Tree Planting Project and many environment cleaning projects in Jaffna. Further, he guided the troops to organize many community work events involving youths and school children in Jaffna peninsula.
The directions and preventive measures activated during the Covid 19 pandemic by Major General Priyantha Perera as Commander Security Forces (Jaffna) and District Coordinator - COVID - 19 Control and Prevention in Jaffna were highly commended and praised by the Government Authorities and Civil community of Jaffna. His logical directives to maintain Quarantine Centers, community assistance programmes, monitoring mechanism and disinfection programmes throughout the pandemic period helped Jaffna peninsula to maintain how records of COVID deaths and cases.
