Major General Chandana Wijayasundara Completes Jaffna Tenure

Major General Chandana Wijayasundara, who held the office of the Commander Security Forces (Jaffna) for almost 6 months, relinquished the appointment on 01 December 2022 to retire from the Army after completing 35 years of illustrious service.

Prior to leaving Jaffna, the outgoing Commander Security Forces – Jaffna, paid official visits to 51, 52, 55 Infantry Divisions and FMA (N) in order to address troops. He offered his gratitude to All Ranks serving in respective formations for high standard of professionalism maintained during his tenure and committed service rendered to maintain a peaceful environment in Jaffna peninsula.

On 30 November 2022, he was extended a Guard of Honour at the Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna by the troops of Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers.

During the tenure in Jaffna, Major General Chandana Wijayasundara initiated several measures to enhance security of Jaffna peninsula, which enabled strengthening the public confidence towards the Security Forces deployed in Jaffna peninsula while maintaining peaceful and free environment for day to day life of the population. He has laid the foundation to civil community projects to uplift the living standards of deserving people and most social welfare projects. To strengthening reconciliation among Tamil community, a construction of houses for poverty ridden families was started to the General Public of Jaffna. In attempt to foster civil military relations in the Jaffna Peninsula he has given guidance to organize tournaments. Being a true leader he has provided his tremendous effort and notable contribution to extract the undesirable image among international community created by the Tamil Diaspora against Sri Lanka Army deployed in Jaffna peninsula, during visits of ambassadors and other foreign delegations.

The Senior Officer launched a Joint Task Force consisting Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, STF and State Intelligence Agencies to eradicate narcotic activities in Jaffna peninsula and to safeguard the youth generation. He has provided his fullest cooperation to streamline approximately 90% of issues pertaining to lands. Further, many infrastructure and welfare facilities were improved at under command formations for the benefit of troops serving in Jaffna peninsula in Army Base Hospital – Palaly and Thalsevana Army Resort.

The outgoing Commander Security Forces Jaffna, a Senior Officer with about 35 years service leaves an indelible mark in Jaffna as a professional soldier, diplomat and a visionary leader. He displayed an outstanding personality; he is a benevolent leader and always maintains goodwill among his subordinates and the people of Jaffna. Under his leadership, security forces were closer to the general public of Jaffna and winning the hearts and minds of all communities.
