Jaffna Troops Eyeing Green Agriculture

In keeping with the government vision of promoting green agriculture and following the guidelines of the head of green agriculture operative centre, General Shavendra Silva, the Jaffna district coordinator of green agriculture, Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa held cordial interaction with Additional Secretary to the Thellippalei divisional secretariat, farmers, grama niladari, economic development officers, heads of the agrarian committees and agricultural officers in the area and other related agencies at the Divisional Secretariat office Thellippalai on 9 January 2022. Divisional secretariat Thelippalei Mr. Sammugarasa Siwasri took part in this discussion.

During the discussion Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa enlightened everyone present on the advantages of promoting green agriculture and enumerated objectives set by the government. The commander very courteously took time to listen to issues and challenges faced by the farmers at present. Then commander raised the confidence of all farmers by assuring them that their problems will be solved as a matter of priority. Then the commander visited few paddy fields in the area to see the ground reality. Here, the farmers insisted on the uncertainty of receiving fertilizer on time.

In order to raise more confidence among farmers about the army effort in promoting green agriculture, the commander provided an opportunity for a village farmer, one of the heads of the agrarian committees and representative to the Ministry of Agriculture to visit the Palaly organic fertilizer project run by the army and displayed the efficiency with which the army producing fertilizer required by Jaffna farmers. At the end of the visit, they were provided with complementary sample fertilizers to these visitors. Commander also had a discussion with representatives from Lakpohora Fertilizer Company and advised them to speed up the process of fertilizer production. He also urged them to conduct organic fertilizer awareness programme across the peninsula.

Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa finally emphasized that he will ensure the army will provide all necessary assistance to government agencies involved in agriculture to promote and succeed in this all efforts of the government.
