Troops of 51 Infantry Division launched a beach cleaning programme covering highly-polluted major coastal area of Gurunagar littered with discarded wrappers, polythine, plastic bottles, empty cans etc. to coincide with the Earth Day.
This beach cleaning programme was organized by the District Secretariat – Jaffna and Marine Environment Protection Authority with a view to creating an attitudinal awakening of the general public and make them recognize the value of the coastal and marine resources while attracting community contribution for beach cleanup efforts.
Accordingly, a large number of Army troops along with Navy, Police, School Scouts and Civilians of the respective area provided the manpower assistance to the community project.
Mr. A. Sivabalasundran, District Secretary, Major General Swarna Bothota, Commander Security Forces (Jaffna), Major General Wajira Welagedara, General Officer Commanding, 51 Infantry Division and other government officials participated in the programme.
