Jaffna Security Forces Join Vasavilan Students in Celebrating “Thai Pongal”

The Officers and Other Ranks of Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna joined the students of Government Tamil Mix School (GTMS), Vasavilan, Jaffna in celebrating “Thai Pongal Day” along with the principal, teachers, parents and a huge gathering of civilians of the area on 17th January 2024.

Troops attended the event under the guidance of Major General SWB Welagedara RSP VSV USP ndc, the Overlooking Commander, Security Forces Jaffna and General Officer Commanding, 51 Infantry Division.

The celebration began initiating worships to ‘Surya’, the sun god, and the ultimate source of energy. Soon after the prayers, the event was coloured by a series of entertaining features with a vast array of performing artists representing the school. Further, traditional games were organized including braking of pots, eyeing the elephant, selecting the best ‘Kolam’ design, etc and gifts were presented to the winners. “Pongal dish”, cooked for the occasion of the festival using an earthen pot was offered to the participants.

The Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna expanding its community oriented projects conducts an English Language Class at community centre “Ambalama”, Palaly for the students of GTMS Vasavillan with the intention of improving their English knowledge.
