Cornerstone Laid for New Pavilion at Varany Central College with Support from Varany Ontrium UK Charity and Army Collaboration

In a significant step towards fostering reconciliation and strengthening ties between the Sri Lankan Army and the local community, a foundation-laying ceremony was held for a much-needed pavilion at Varany Central College, Kodikamam, on 24 March 2025. The project is spearheaded through a generous donation of R5,645,000.00 from the UK-based charity Varany Ontrium UK, alongside skilled labor support provided by the Sri Lanka Army.

The foundation stone for this vital infrastructure was laid by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General BKGML Rodrigo, in the presence of senior military officials, school representatives, and community members. The initiative is being coordinated by the General Officer Commanding, 52 Division, with construction support from the 5th Engineer Services Regiment (5 ESR) and the 523 Brigade, under the guidance of the Security Forces Commander – Jaffna.

The event was attended by Chief Secretary of the Northern Province, Mr. Ilangovan; the Commander of Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna, Major General YABM Yahanpath RWP RSP ndu psc; the General Officer Commanding 52 Infantry Division, Major General VDS Perera; the Brigade Commander of 523 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier SMCAS Samarathunga RSP; the Commanding Officers of the 11 SLE and 5 ESR; as well as the principal, teachers, students, parents, alumni of Varany Central College, distinguished invitees, and representatives from the donor organization.

This initiative not only marks a milestone in enhancing the school's sports facilities but also symbolizes a step forward in fostering harmony and development in the Jaffna Peninsula. The collaboration between the Army and the local community reflects a shared commitment to progress, reconciliation, and youth empowerment.

The new pavilion will provide much-needed infrastructure for students and the school community, promoting sports and extracurricular activities. The joint effort between Varany Ontrium UK and the Sri Lanka Army highlight the power of unity in rebuilding and developing educational institutions in the region.

The construction is expected to be completed in the coming months, further strengthening the synergies between the Army and civilians while contributing to the region's educational and sporting landscape.
