Army Troops Intensify Disaster-Relief Efforts Across 55 Infantry Division Area

Troops of the 55 Infantry Division, supported by the 551, 552, and 553 Infantry Brigades, have carried out a wide range of rescue and relief operations in the Kilinochchi region following heavy rains, flooding, and soil erosions.

On 28 November, rescue teams from the 7 SLLI and 14 SLNG saved dozens of civilians trapped by rising floodwaters in Rathnapuram and Kumarasamy Puram. Troops also prevented major flooding by reinforcing a canal embankment carrying overflow from the Iranamadu Reservoir.

Soldiers cleared fallen trees blocking key roads, assisted emergency transport, and worked with the Navy to rescue elderly civilians during night operations. They also saved a driver and assistant trapped in a toppled tipper truck and ensured the safe passage of an ambulance carrying a pregnant mother through floodwaters.

Infrastructure protection remained a priority as troops strengthened eroded tank bunds, removed trees endangering public buildings, and delivered relief to stranded villages cut off by submerged roads.

Humanitarian assistance continued with the distribution of essential supplies, drinking water, and emergency items to displaced families across Kilinochchi. Troops also facilitated the movement of civilians and medical equipment across damaged bridges. The 55 Infantry Division remains fully committed to supporting affected communities until normalcy is restored.
