In a proactive effort to tackle the persistent challenge of substance abuse among military personnel, the 553 Infantry Brigade have introduced an extensive drug prevention programme on 28 June 2023 at the 55 Infantry Division Gymnasium aimed at safeguarding the well-being of the troops in Northern Peninsula. This groundbreaking initiative not only aims to protect military personnel from the adverse effects of drug abuse but also strives to enhance operational effectiveness by ensuring a drug-free environment within the ranks.
This gigantic programme was organized under the esteemed leadership of Major General Prasanna Gunaratne RSP ndu psc IG, the General Officer Commanding 55 Infantry Division and the expert guidance of Brigadier Saman Perera RSP, Commander of the 553 Infantry Brigade attended by 420 troops from the 55 Infantry Division Area of Responsibility. The drug prevention programme, conducted by Mr. Amaranath Thenna and Mr. Sampath De Seram a distinguished counselors serving at the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC), reflects a comprehensive approach to address the complex nature of substance abuse issues. Drawing on the latest researches and evidence-based strategies, the programme encompasses education, prevention, support services and strict enforcement measures.
Military personnel received comprehensive and targeted training on the dangers of drug abuse, including the physical and mental health risks, legal ramifications and the potential impact on military readiness. By equipping troops with the knowledge and awareness necessary to make informed decisions, the programme aims to prevent drug abuse before it even starts. Recognizing that addressing the root causes of drug abuse is essential, the programme also emphasizes the importance of support services. Specialized counseling and treatment options will be made available to military personnel struggling with substance abuse, ensuring they have access to the necessary resources to overcome addiction and regain control of their lives.
As the programme is rolled out across all battalions under the 55 Infantry Division, it is hoped that the positive impact on individual lives and the collective strength of the military will be significant, leading to a safer and more resilient military community dedicated to serving and protecting the nation.
