On Wednesday, June 28, 250 Army personnel and local residents of Point Pedro worked on a project to remove piles of trash and environmental pollutants that had been lying along the sathkotai to urani beach, under the direction of Major General, S.R.K. Hettiarchchi RWP RSP VSV USP ndu psc, Commander, Security Forces Jaffna.
Tourists and locals have left the region littered with polythene, plastic bottles, and numerous contaminants, endangering the environment and creating a health risk as dry weather spells exacerbated the problem. With the help of numerous Army soldiers and civilians, the cleanup effort was undertaken with the collaboration of the Point Pedro Divisional Secretary office and the Point Pedro Pradeshiya Sabha. Army soldiers worked with the Point Pedro Urban Council and the village development committees, members of sport club, members of disaster management, members of police, school students to make the meritorious act a success.
This project was conducted under the guidance of Major General Prasanna Gunaratne RSP ndu psc IG General Officer Commanding 55 Infantry Division and the supervision of Brigadier Jude Kariyakarawana RWP RSP USP Commander 551 Infantry Brigade. Troops of 4th Battalian of Sri Lanka Sinha regiment and Contributed their man power to success the project and It was successfully completed with the appreciations of Government officials and local community of the area.
