Thunnalai South Government Tamil Medium School (GTMS), established in 1938, has been a beacon of education in the area, catering to more than 90 students. However, the school has been neglected and requires immediate refurbishment to create an optimal learning environment for its current students.
Taking cognizance of this pressing need, Brigadier Jude Kariyakarawana, the Commander 551 Infantry Brigade, initiated a project in close collaboration with Major General Ravi Ratnasingham (Retired) from Vanni Aid Canada. Responding to the request of Principal Mr. T. Vijayakumar and the invitation extended by Zonal Educational Director Mr. K. Sathyabalan, the refurbishment work was officially launched at a simple ceremony held at the school premises under the patronage of Major General Prasanna Gunaratne, the General Officer Commanding of the 55 Infantry Division.
The ceremony, held on 22 May 2023, marks the beginning of a transformative journey for the school.The ceremony witnessed the active participation of various stakeholders, including Mr. Jeganathan representing Vanni Aid Canada, government officials, dedicated school teachers, parents, and well-wishers. Their collective support underscores the commitment to creating an enhanced learning environment for the students.
The Sri Lanka Army has graciously offered technical assistance and engineering support for the refurbishment project. Financial aid and necessary materials, on the other hand, will be provided by Vanni Aid Canada.
