The 51 Infantry Division initiated another community - related programme on Christmas day by distributing gifts and sweets for children at various churches in Jaffna. The event was initiated by Major General Mahendra Fernando, former General Officer Commanding 51 Infantry Division with the guidance of Major General Chandana Wijayasundara, former Commander Security Forces (Jaffna) and under the supervision of General Officer Commanding 51 Infantry Division, Major General Wajira Welagedara.
The programme was initiated to enhance trust and confidence among military and Tamil community in order to address the cultural and ethnic difference in Jaffna. The events were organized to distribute gifts and sweets for more than 1000 children with the contribution of all under command Brigades and Battalions of 51 Infantry Division. All the programmes were successfully conducted with the participations of Commander 511 Infantry Brigade, Commander 512 Infantry Brigade, Commander 513 Infantry Brigade and all Commanding Officers and troops.
The main ceremony held at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Jaffna in the presence of Most Reverend Dr Justin Bernard Gnanapragasam, the Bishop of Jaffna Diocese and General Officer Commanding 51 Infantry Division Major General Wajira Welagedara. The entire event had been brightened, which encompassed a mix of all cultural identities denoting the ethnic/religious harmony in the area.
