In alignment with the "Clean Sri Lanka" National Programme, the District Secretariat of Kilinochchi spearheaded the "A Beautiful Coastal Line and Attractive Tourism Destination" Beach Cleanup Project at Poonaryn and Elephant Pass on 23 February 2025. The initiative aimed at promoting environmental conservation and boosting tourism, witnessed participation from multiple stakeholders.
A collaborative effort brought together representatives from the District Secretariat - Kilinochchi, Divisional Secretariat - Poonaryn, Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Police, the Fisherman Association, and local schoolchildren. Notably, the 55 Infantry Division played a significant role, deploying 10 x 139 troops from the 552 Infantry Brigade, 553 Infantry Brigade, 6 SLSR, 22 VIR, and 2 SLNG to contribute to the cleanup activities.
Dignitaries present at the event included the Governor of the Northern Province, the District Secretary of Kilinochchi, the Divisional Secretary of Poonakary, and Major General WAUS Wanasekara RWP USP, Deputy General Officer Commanding of the 55 Infantry Division. Brigadier CD Welagedara USP, Commander of the 552 Infantry Brigade, also attended as an invited guest.
The cleanup program successfully reinforced the importance of maintaining a clean coastal environment while fostering community involvement and military-civil cooperation in environmental sustainability.
