World Environment Day Programmes Conducted by 55 Infantry Division

In conjunction with World Environment Day 2026 and the declaration of National Environment Week from 30 May 2026 to 05 June 2026, the 55 Infantry Division, together with its subordinate brigades and units, conducted a series of environmental conservation and public awareness programmes. These initiatives were organized with the objective of drawing public attention to emerging environmental challenges and global environmental concerns while promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

The programmes included the removal of solid waste and invasive Parthenium plants along the road from the Kilinochchi District Secretariat to the administrative area of the 55 Infantry Division; the conduct of awareness lectures under the theme, “Let Us Contribute to Mitigating the Impacts of Climate Change”; the cleaning of the bund and surrounding areas of Dry Aru Kulam Tank; environmental cleaning programmes around the War Heroes’ Memorial and Cimik Park; the removal of solid waste along a one-kilometre stretch of road from the 11 (Volunteer) Gajaba Regiment Camp to Akkarayankulam; tree-planting programmes in coastal areas, along roadsides, and within camp premises; and the removal of plastic waste and other refuse from military locations.

To ensure the successful implementation of these activities during National Environment Week, approximately 700 Army personnel participated in the various environmental conservation programmes conducted under the supervision and coordination of the 55 Infantry Division.

These initiatives reflect the continued commitment of the Sri Lanka Army towards environmental protection, sustainable development, and the promotion of public awareness on the importance of preserving the natural environment for future generations. Through such programmes, the Army remains dedicated to supporting national efforts aimed at fostering a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable environment.
