Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) WWV, RWP and two bars, RSP and bar, USP, MMSc (Strat Stu-China), MSc (Def Stu) in Mgt, MSc (Def & Strat Stu), fndu (China), psc, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence made an emergency visit to Jaffna and Kilinochchi Districts on 28 November 2024 to inspect and assess the disaster situation and relief efforts in the region.
The Secretary, Ministry of Defence accompanied by the Commander of 1 Corps and Overlooking Commander of Security Forces (Jaffna) - Major General MTI Mahalekam WWV RWP RSP USP ndu psc, General Officer Commanding of51,52and 55 Infantry Divisions, Brigadier General Staff of Security Forces (Jaffna) and Brigade Commanders in the region. The delegation visited several areas worst affected by floods caused due to the inclement weather being experienced in most parts of the country. During the visit, the Secretary directed relevant officials to ensure the safety of the affected families.
Subsequently, a special discussion was held at the District Secretariat-Jaffna under the patronage of the Secretary, Ministry of Defence. Officials of the Disaster Management Center, senior public administrative officers and senior officers of the Tri services attended for the discussion.
The current situation and its future trends, relief measures that are currently being implemented and can be further strengthened if the situation worsens, were discussed. Further, the Secretary also instructed the relevant authorities to take all necessary steps to expedite rescue operations and provide relief to the displaced people to prevent loss of life.
