Army Football Team Meets Northern Province Sides in Friendly Tournament

The Sri Lanka Army Football Team participated in a two-day friendly tournament with civilian football teams from the Northern Province at Durayappah Stadium, Jaffna, as part of a Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiative aimed at promoting football and fostering reconciliation in the region.

The tournament, held on 7th and 8th February 2026, Army team faced closely contested matches with two civilian teams. The opening fixture on 7th February between Sri Lanka Army Team and Jaffna District Football Team ended in a goalless draw, whilst the following day’s encounter saw the Army team secure a 2-0 victory over the Mannar District Football Team.

The event was organised by the Chief Coordinator Civil Affairs, Security Forces Headquarters (Jaffna), which coordinated the participation of the civilian football teams. The 512 Infantry Brigade undertook the arrangement of refreshments and other logistical support for all participating teams throughout the two days programme, operating under the facilitation of 51 Infantry Division and the guidance of Major General KTP De Silva RSP ndu psc, Commander Security Forces Headquarters (Jaffna).

Major General KJNMPK Nawarathna RWP RSP ndu, Director General Infantry and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Football Committee, attended the event, underlining the military’s commitment to sports development and community engagement in the region. The tournament also drew the participation of key civilian dignitaries, including Mr B. Mugunthan, Provincial Director of the Department of Sports for the Northern Provincial Council and Mr S. Sathananthan, Senior District Sports Officer for Jaffna.

In a gesture of goodwill, both civilian football teams were presented with footballs at the conclusion of the programme, reinforcing the CIMIC project’s objective of supporting football development whilst strengthening civil-military relations in Jaffna. The initiative represents part of broader efforts by the Security Forces to promote sporting activities and community reconciliation in the Northern Province through meaningful engagement with local civilian organisations.
