The 55 Infantry Division of the Sri Lanka Army is one of the foremost Infantry Divisions that has been fully committed to safeguarding the nation. The 29th Anniversary of the Division was commemorated in a dignified yet simple manner with several traditional ceremonial events on 15 December 2025 at its present headquarters premises in the Kilinochchi District, under the supervision of the General Officer Commanding Major General W. M. A. B. Wijekoon, USP, ndc.
In preparation for the anniversary, on 08 December 2025, religious observances were initiated by invoking blessings on the Divisional flag at the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. This was conducted with the objective of seeking blessings for all officers and civil staff of the Division, as well as in remembrance and to invoke merit for all officers who sacrificed their lives and were disabled while performing operational duties under the 55 Infantry Division In parares to this.
Religious observances were conducted on 12 December 2025 at the St. Theresa’s Church.
Furthermore, on 13 December 2025, multi-religious observances were held at the Lumbini Vihara and the Kandasamy Kovil in the Kilinochchi District. On the same evening, a floral tribute ceremony was conducted in front of the Elephant Pass (Alimankada) Gamini Kularatne Memorial.
On 15 December 2025, in order to mark the anniversary in a dignified manner, a Guard of Honour was presented to the General Officer Commanding of the 55 Infantry Division, following which a traditional all ranks lunch was held to uplift the morale of all Officers and Other ranks of the Division.
Finany, with the Intent of promote sport ability among Officers and Other Ranks of the 55 Infantry Division, under command Brigade Headquarters and Battalions, cricket, volleyball and badminton tournaments were conducted. Thereafter, awards and prizes were presented to the outstanding sportsmen who excelled in these competitions at a ceremony held on 23 December 2025, under the patronage of the General Officer Commanding of the 55 Infantry Division.
