The Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival 2026 for the civilian community of the Jaffna Peninsula, organised and conducted by the 51 Infantry Division on the direction of the Security Forces Headquarters (Jaffna), was successfully held on 18 April 2026 at the Duraiappah Stadium.
The Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The Chief Guest was warmly received by the Commander Security Forces (Jaffna), Major General K J N M P K Nawarathna RWP RSP ndu, together with the General Officer Commanding 51 Infantry Division, Major General M R Razick RSP ndu.
The festival featured a vibrant programme of cultural performances and traditional games representing both Sinhala and Tamil heritage. The event showcased colourful dance performances, cultural items and a traditional Gami Gedara which reflected the rich customs and lifestyle associated with the New Year season.
The celebrations concluded with the presentation of awards and gifts to the winners of the competitions.
District Secretaries of Jaffna and Kilinochchi, senior officers, officers, senior representatives from the Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Police, other ranks and a large number of civilians attended the event.
