A contemporary awareness lecture on dangerous drugs, their effects, and the laws related to the prevention of illegal drugs was held at Army Headquarters on 29 August 2024 under the direction of the Commander of the Army and the supervision of the Adjutant General. The event was organized by the Directorate of Provost with support from the Directorate of Training.
The lecture was conducted by DIG (O/L) Oshan Hewawitharana of the Police Narcotic Range, Colombo, took place from 0900 hr to 1130 hr. It provided a comprehensive overview of the types of dangerous drugs, their harmful effects on individuals and society, and the existing legal framework in Sri Lanka for the prevention of illegal drugs.
A total of 244 officers physically attended the venue, representing all branches and directorates of Army Headquarters, along with the 1 Corps and Security Forces Headquarters, including under-command Divisions, Brigades, all Regimental Headquarters, and Army/Regimental Training Schools. In addition to the physical session, 630 Officers and 5729 Other Ranks from the aforementioned Establishments Island-wide attended the lecture virtually. The total attendance of the lecture via physical and virtual platforms reached over 874 Officers and 5729 Other Ranks, emphasizing the Army's commitment to addressing the critical issue of illegal drug-related offences among the Army personnel.
