The 5 SLCMP was established as a new unit on 10 April 2010 with 08 officers and 225 NCOs after receiving AHQ approval for establishing the 5 SLCMP as a new battalion.
The Sri Lanka corps of Military Police unit which functioned as a regular unit of the Sri Lanka Army was set up as 05th Military Police regular units functioning under the Regimental Centre with expansion of the Sri Lanka Army. The 5th Sri Lanka Military Police was established under the command of the Provost marshal of SL Army. The under mentioned offrs were the initial Commanding Officers of the unit who provided provost support to SFHQ (KLN) ,1 Corps, 57 Div and 66 Div in SFHQ (MLT) AOR under 6 Commanding Officers
With the restructuring process of entire Sri Lanka Army, 5th Regiment, Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police was instructed to redeploy at Regimental Headquarters, Polhengoda on 30 November 2023 and placed under command to Dte of Pro in order to engage in ceremonial Military Police duties.
The inauguration ceremony of redeploy of the unit was taken place on 1st December under the guidance of the Provost Marshal of Sri Lanka Army and the Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police Maj Gen ACA De Zoysa USP Hdmc Lsc.
