According to the instruction of Lieutenant General LVCE Waidyarathna VSV, the Commander of the army at that time on 23rd March 1991 with 12 commissioned officers and 178 other rankers, the 3rd Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police had been launched as a relieved unit in Pallekale, Kandy, under the 3rd Division. Lieutenant Colonel AIB Unanthanna was the 1st Commanding officer Major H Abewickrama was first Second in command and Capt CS Atipola as Adjutant was assigned duties there. Under their guidance and supervision, they were able to do their duties successfully covering areas, in Pallekale, Maduruoya, Batticoloa, Mahaoya, Walikanda, Puttalam, Diyathalawa, Punani, Trincomalee, and Minneriya. After that with the intention of controlling the Tamil separatist ethnic conflicts which was slightly arising, the 3rd division which was in Pallekale, Kandy was shifted to Hardy Camp and established there. 3rd Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police which was under the 3rd division was shifted to Ampara and from there started to continue their duties.

Control of the separatist ethnic conflict which was rising day by day destroying lives of people and public property by the LTTE in Batticaloa, Eastern province, became inconvenient for the 3rd division in Ampara. So the Division was shifted to Batticoloa from Ampara with the establishment 3rd Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police to the Kalladi, Batticoloa from Ampara. 3rd Regiment posted their duties in Welikandha, Batticaloa, Ampara, and Trincomalee as Provost Coys and at the same time performed the duties as Provost sections in Madhuruoya, Minneriya, Dehiaththakandiya.

Lt Col P. Udugampola was the Commanding Officer and he maintained good relationships with private and government sectors in the Polonnaruwa area. He Commands his subordinates in a very responsible manner in this period. 3rd Regiment had received permanent land in sudugalkanda and established the unit in Girithale. The 3rd Regiment Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police moved to Girithale in March 1997. But after 2 years in 1999 According to the Regimental concept 3rd Regiment moved to the Colombo and 1st Regiment moved to Girithale.

After posting in Colombo - Narahenpita 3rd Regiment performed the duties in AHQ, Panagoda Pallekele, Diyathalawa, as a Provost coy and performed the duties in Boossa, Kurunegala, Kuruwita, as Provost sections and also performed VIP duties and special duties in several areas in the country. According to the Regimental Concept, After 2 year’s unit moved to the Anuradhapura and 2nd Regiment moved to the Anuradhapura to Girithale. 1st Regiment again returned to Colombo on 25t1 May 2001 unit was established in 21 DIV Ranasewapura and performed duties in Vavuniya, Mannar, Welioya, and Puththalama Districts.

Lt Col DKGD Sirisena was the Commanding Officer in these eras and he decided that the 3 SLCMP needed permanent land. With the instruction of the Commanding Officer 8th of July 2008, unit HQ moved to the permanent land in Galkulaman- Anuradhapura. This unit performs the military police duties SFHQ(W) - Vavniya, 21 DIV - Anuradhapura, 54 DIV - Mannar, 56 DIV - Kokeliya, And During the humanitarian operation 3 SLCMP posting the duties 57 DIV,58 DIV, 59 DIV, 61 DIV, 62 DIV, after raising the 5SLCMP 57, 58, 59, DIVS attached to the 5 SLCMP - Kilinochchi.

Completing 23 years of service and 21 years of bounteous service during the era of separatist terrorism struggle it is working as a logistic unit now. Under 12 commanding officers persisting duties in Central, Eastern, and Western provinces now is broadened to Vavuniya and Mannar in Nothern province centralizing Anuradhapura district in North Central province.
