Commando Regiment organised a traditional New Year Festival to mark the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2024 on Saturday, 06th April 2024 at the Swimming pool site, at Ganemulla. The festival was themed “Commando Regiment Seva Vanitha Bakmaha Asiriya” and was organised by the Commando Regiment Seva Vanitha Branch.
Mrs. Janaki Liyanage, the President of Army Seva Vanitha Unit graced the occasion as the chief guest and Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, the Commander of the Army also presented at the event.
The President of Army Seva Vanitha Unit and the other invitees lit the traditional oil lamp at the village house (‘Gami Gedara’) located at the venue and visited the special places in the premises. Traditional aesthetic games and events added colour to the festival.
The festival included 25 traditional new year games including raban playing, grease pole climbing, cadjan leaf weaving, bun eating, pillow fights, selection of the new year little prince and princess (Awurudu Kumara and Kumari) eye placing on the elephant, lime balancing, slow cycle-peddling, tug of war, fancy dress parade. Additionally, a number of other traditional and fun-making games were also held during the festival.
Towards the end, the Commander of the Army, the President of Army Seva Vanitha Unit and other invitees gave away gifts to winners of the competitions.
Maj Gen PGPS Rathnayake RWP RSP ndc, Col of the Regiment Commando Regiment, Maj Gen KHMS Wickramarathna RSP, Regimental Council members, Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks and Civil Servants and their families participated in the festival.
