Major General R P D U Rajapaksha RWP RSP assumed duties as the 15th Colonel of the Regiment of the Commando Regiment on Monday morning (18th January 2021) in a simple ceremony at Commando Regimental Centre Ganemulla. A brief religious ceremony invoked blessings on the new appointment before Maj Gen Upali Rajapaksha formally signed a document to signify the acceptance of the new office at auspicious time.
Commandant Sri Lanka Military Academy Brigadier Chrishantha Gnanaratne, Commander Commando Brigade Brigadier Shanaka Rathnayaka, Centre Commandant Brigadier Shamal Silva and other Senior Officers/Officers of the Commando Regiment attended the occasion.
Maj Gen Upali Rajapaksha was enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army on 16th March 1987 with Intake 27. After successful completion of his officer cadet training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, he was privileged to join with the prestigious Commando Regiment. Since the graduation as a Commando, he has been mostly employed in operational areas where he was recognized as a brave young officer of the Commando Regiment who was able to fight fearlessly against the LTTE in the effort of the eradicating ruthless plague of terrorism from our mother land. Further, Major General Upali Rajapaksha has taken part all most all the major offensives conducted by the Commandos.
Maj Gen Upali Rajapaksha has held all most all the key appointments in the Commando Regiment and he was privileged to hold many key appointments in the Army such as Commander 623 Brigade, Commander 541 Brigade, Deputy Commandant Infantry Training Centre, Director - Directorate of Operations, Deputy General Officer Commanding 58 Division and currently serving as the General Officer Commanding 68 Division.
