Commando Regiment officially received another successful and significant research outcome of the Centre for Research and Development of the MOD; the first container based mobile live firing range in Sri Lanka.The unit was officially handed over to the Commando Regiment by the Director General of the CRD, Major General (Retd) Renuka Rowel RWP VSV USP ndu USACGSC, during a charm ceremony held on 24 January 2020 at Regimental Centre, Commando Regiment Ganemulla.
The pistol rated mobile live firing range was installed inside a 40 feet shipping container and fully ballistic protected using the newly developed ballistic rubber by CRD. The air conditioned range is equipped with all modern facilities to safely conduct live firing with the use of modern technology and built according to the international standards. The range is equipped with a digital target system including MILO training option, an automated ventilation system, user control lighting system, an electronic alarm system and built-in bullet fragment collection system.
Container based live firing ranges are currently commercially built only in few European countries and not affordable for developing countries like Sri Lanka due to associated high acquiring and maintenance costs ( Approximately Rs 65 to 70 Million per unit).
