With the expansion of the Sri Lanka Army , due to the operational requirements, troops were rapidly deployed in the Northern and Eastern area. In order to provide the required Engineer Services, the 2 Engineer Services Regiment was established on 21 August 1991 at Ranasevapura, Anuradhapura in the Buildings of the 3 Works Squadron inside the 2 Division premises. Lt Col MDR Peris SLE was appointed as the first Commanding Officer of the 2 Engineer Services Regiment. Maj WR Wasanthakumara SLE was appointed as the Second in Command , Capt EM Peramune SLE was appointed as the Adjutant and Capt JDI Rodrigo SLE was appointed as the first Stores Officer . Warrant Officer I BAS Ariyawansha was appointed as the Regimental Sergeant Major.
As per the direction of His Excellency the President, published by the Extra Ordinary Government Gazette No 702/06 dated 20 February 1992, The 2 Engineer Services Regiment was Officially raised as a Regular Unit of the Sri Lanka Army Regular Force with effect from 01 November 1991. The initial approved establishment was 15 Officers and 210 Other Ranks.
Since the buildings and accommodation facilities were not sufficient, a land was reserved at Pandulagama, Thissawewa area and the initial activities were commenced to re-locate the Unit at Pandulagama.
To coincide with the first Unit Day, a "tree planting" was carried out on 01 November 1992 at the Camp Premises at Pandulagama,Tissawewa under the patronage of Lt Col MDR Peris .
On 22 September 1994, the 2 Engineer Services Regiment was relocated at Thissawewa in the newly constructed HQ Building. The HQ Building was declared open on the same day by the Commander 2 Division Maj Gen AMU Senevirathne USP ndc
The present approved Unit Establishment is 34 Officers and 590 Other Ranks and the Unit is presently commanded by MAJ HMSJ Bandara CES.
