The 17th Engineer Services Regiment has been approved to establish this unit under SFHQ (Central) Jurisdiction by FRO 28/2014 and military order dated 11.11.2014 with effect from 26.08.2014, and accordingly this unit has been established. RHQ/A/OFFICR/06/371 and the English letter dated 10.09.2014 nominated O/750436 Lieutenant (QM) Tech PPSP Bandara CES was appointed as the first officer for the preliminary work, and on 30.09.2014, 15 soldiers from Engineer Services Regiment were appointed reported to GE Station (Diyathalawa). As the first commanding officer of this unit, Major MNJ Perera CES who was appointed as the first Commanding Officer, and he was reported to GE Station (Diyathalawa) on 01.10.2014. Until now, 356 soldiers who were on duty at GE Station (Diyathalawa), GE Station (Kandy), GE Station (Hambanthota) and GE Station (Buttala) under the 1st Engineer Service Regiment were reported to this unit by a travel order dated 01.12.2014 from Engineer Services Regiment. WO ll Weerasekera was appointed as the Regimental Sargent Major.
This regiment has been established in an area of 10 acres and 27 perch in the Diyathalawa Manikkanda area of SFHQ (Central) AOR, and Presently the commander of the regiment is Lt. Col. EADP Edirisinghe LSC.
