COMMANDOS BID FAREWELL TO BRIGADIER E A D K SURIYA KUMARA USP

A dignified farewell ceremony was held at the Commando Regimental Centre, Ganemulla, to honour Brigadier E A D K Suriya Kumara USP, who gracefully retired from active service on 12 October 2025, after completing 33 years of exemplary military service to the nation and the Commando Regiment.

At the outset of the ceremonial proceedings, Brigadier R R C Karunaratna RWP, the Centre Commandant of the Commando Regiment, warmly welcomed the retiring Senior Officer at the entrance to the Regimental Centre. He was then accorded a Ceremonial Guard Turnout, followed by a Guard of Honour at the parade ground, symbolizing deep respect for his distinguished service.

Following the parade, Brigadier E A D K Suriya Kumara USP offered a floral tribute to the fallen Commandos at the Commando War Memorial, accompanied by Senior Officers. Thereafter, he posed for a group photograph with all Officers in front of the Officers’ Mess, marking a memorable moment of camaraderie.

Subsequently, the retiring Brigadier addressed all Commando Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers at the Maroon Legacy, where he emphasized the importance of preserving the unique Commando culture in both on and off duty. During his heartfelt address, he reflected upon his illustrious and unblemished career, expressing gratitude to all Veterans, Senior Officers, Officers, and Non-Commissioned Officers who had supported him throughout his service.

After signing the Visitors’ Book at the Officers’ Mess, Brigadier E A D K Suriya Kumara USP attended an interaction session with all ranks, followed by a tea party at the Corporals’ Club. As he departed, a street line of Commandos extended from the Corporals’ Club to the main entrance of the Regimental Centre, where he received his final salute, symbolizing deep honour and affection from his comrades-in-arms.

The event was graced by Brigadier R.R.C. Karunaratna RWP, Centre Commandant of the Commando Regimental Centre, Brigadier M.S.I. Aluwihare RWP RSP, Commander 591 Infantry Brigade, Senior Officers, Officers, and a cross-section of Non-Commissioned Officers representing all Commando Battalions.

As the final segment of the day’s programme, a farewell dinner was held at the Officers’ Mess, attended by Major General K H M S Wickramaratne RSP, 1 Corps Commander and Colonel of the Regiment, Major General T C M G S T Cooray RWP RSP USP ndc psc, General Officer Commanding 11 Infantry Division, Major General M.R. Razick RSP ndu, Deputy General Officer Commanding 57 Infantry Division, members of the Commando Council, Senior Officers and Officers of the Regiment.

The ceremony stood as a fitting tribute to a gallant officer whose dedicated service, leadership, and commitment have left an indelible mark on the proud history of the Sri Lanka Army Commando Regiment.
