THE 18th VIJAYABAHU INFANTRY REGIMENT

During the first two days of this operation there were no attacks from terrorists. But on the third day troops faced to a brutal attack from terrorists around wishwamadukulam tank. After a fierce battle of four days troops were able to take over a Combat training school between wishwamadukulam tank and kolamadukulam tank holding the GR 735595.

Meanwhile this battle is going troops had to face dreadful attacks of terrorists at GR 736586 on 26/01/2009. A group of terrorists around 300 personal were gathered inside the combat training school terrorists were taking the advantage of moats and barriers. Despite of these conditions O/507719 2Lt ISN Imbulgoda commanded his platoon beyond terrorist defense line even without caring of their own lives. Because of this brave feat troops were able to take over the terrorist defense line. During this dreadful battle O/507719 2 Lt ISN Imbulgoda sacrificed his life to motherland.

Since terrorists were unable to stop the movement of security forces, they blasted the dam of the kolamadukulam tank at GR 722593. But after a crucial battle troops were able to take over the 16 square Km area between wishwamadukulam and kolamadukulam including so called wishwamadu combat training school. By this time 57 and 58 Divisions were reaching wishwamadu from west and north. But they were facing difficulties on passing paddy field areas of kolamadukulam tank. Therefore the unit protected eastern areas of the kolamadukulam dam and allowed 57 Division to travel towards eastern side. At this point, tasks assigned to 3rd task force were accomplished and stop advancing further from this place.

This dreadful battle was successfully accomplished by the unit troops with courage and enthusiasm and second in commander officer O/63367 Major HLC Liyanage was directing the troops and unit adjutant S/64484 Captain HPSKP Bandara was coordinating and supporting to the second in Comander Task Fore 2.

After the unit was joined with 2nd brigade and started duty in second defense line of Muthiyakadu area under 623 brigade. And with the proceedings of humanitarian operations unit continued to perform duties in operational areas.

During May of 2009, C and D Coys of the unit contributed to support liberated civilians and restrained an effort of terrorist to flee through the Sri Lanka Army front defense line in Nandikadal area. The unit was assigned with a task to demolish terrorists hiding in pudumathalan area eastern to A 35 road. Unit was able to confirm the security of the area while killing 10 terrorists who were hiding in this area. From 12/05/2009 to 20/05/2009 unit performed duties on the eastern side of the nandikadal lagoon and currently battalion is performing duties under 68 Division and 682 brigade covering 7 grama sewa divisions in pudukudirippu area.

DUTIES ASSIGNED TO THIS BATTALION

  Establish the security of the area.
  Perform foot patrol and bicycle patrol all around the area.
  Employ troops on road barriers and security check points.
  Resettlement of civilians. (Unit has resettled around 13717 civilians from 2011/06/24 to now.)
  Support operations of Government offices, Hospitals and Grama Sewa offices.
  Distribute aids from Governmental and Non Governmental organizations and coordination.
  Provide security for important places in the area.
  Provide security and guidance for VIPs travel around the area.
  Observing rehabilitated and non rehabilitated former LTTE members and helping to enhance their life.
  Examine on Tamil Diaspora and special personals of NGO and inform to head quarters.
  Supporting to civilians in natural disasters like floods, Tsunami.
  Provide man power to reconstruct schools, bus stands and water projects to enhance the life of civilians.
  Without any discrimination on nationality or religion, supporting for reconstruction of religious places and organizing religious events.
  Working together with police to stop illegal activities like destroying natural resources of the area.
