591 බල සේනා මූලස්ථානයේ ඉතිහාසය

Wanni Humanitarian Operation was launched with the intent of defeating ruthless terrorist nip in the bud which was dragging over three decades. At this juncture 591 Brigade was raised on 13 October 2007 at the PRAKKRAMAPURA under the 59 Division.

Lt Col A S Ariyasinghe SLA was the first brigade commander who was tasked to capture the MULLATTIVU town on the axis of NELUMWEWA, JANAKAPURA, ANDAMKULAM, KUMMALAMUNAI, MULLIYAWELI and CHILAWATTA. While achieving the aim following LTTE strongholds/bases were captured by the troops of 591 Brigade.

Presently Brigade Headquarters is located in the center of MULLAITTIVU town having entrusted the duties of assisting the local authorities in order to maintain the law and order in the area. Present Brigade Headquarters was declared open by, then commander of the army Lt Gen J Jayasooriya USP ndu psc on 06 April 2010. Following battalions have been served under the brigade during the past. At present Brigade been allocated with 2 x Battalions namely 23 SLLI and 24 SLSR.

During the final stage of the Humanitarian Operation Brigade was able to rescue 76000 odd innocent Tamil civilians who were used as human shield by the LTTE. Subsequently MULLAITTIVU town has been given all the required infrastructure facilities by the Government. Thereby living standard of the general public has been elevated.

Whilst ensuring the security of the MULLAITTIVU town and the suburbs the 591 Brigade is also looking after the comfort of the public with the assistance of the local and foreign donors by way of different loan schemes, grants, donation of equipment’s and scholarships for school children ect….
