Soldiers of 2 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) serving under the Security Force Headquarters - Central (SFHQ-C) turned good Samaritans and took the initiative of installing a drinking water pumping system to the students at Kahattewala Rahula Vidyalaya of Haputale Educational Zone.
Realizing the hardships of the students undergoing for drinking water, both officers and other ranks joined together and pocketed out own money for purchase of water pump and all other accessories, needed for storage and installation that could supply drinking water to all segments in the school premises, a requirement that has prevailed since 1940s.
The formal handing over of the entire project to the school took place on Wednesday (21) with the participation of Major General U.A.B Medawela, Commander, SFHQ-C as the Chief Guest.
After commissioning the water pump system, the Principal thanked the Army for their concern and considerateness since lack of drinking water remained a long-felt requirement of students for generations.
SLEME officers, SFHQ-C officers, soldiers, teachers and students were present at the time the scheme was commissioned in a simple ceremony.
