12 Infantry Division was raised on 02 April 2011 at Hambanthota under the Security Force Headquarters (South). This Infantry Division was formed as a result of the re-designation of Task Force 2 after the completion of the humanitarian operation. This Division is responsible for Monaragala and Hambanthota districts. Division Headquarters is located at Nagarawewa, Hambanthota. Presently, 12 Infantry Division consists of 121 Infantry Brigade and 122 Infantry Brigade and it covers approximately 8248 Km² land area and 151.3 km coastal area. 121 Infantry Brigade is responsible for Monaragala district and the Brigade Headquarters of 121 Infantry Brigade is located at Kubukkana, Buttala. It consists of 20 SLSR and 18 GW battalions. Brigade Headquarters of 122 Infantry Brigade is located at Weerawila area and it consists of 23 GR and 3 SLNG Battalions. 12 Infantry Division has contributed its support to internal security duties, disaster relief operations, and civil affairs in any needy situation in the area.
