In line with the Government food security programme and Sri Lanka Army Green Agri project, the Mechanized Infantry Regiment began to cultivate abandoned paddy fields within close proximity to the Regimental Centre.
As initial steps, nearly 5 acres of abandoned paddy area was cultivated with cowpeas on 03 July 2022. The event was organized with the direction and close supervision of Major General Channa Weerasuriya, Deputy Chief of Staff - Army Headquarters and Colonel of the Regiment - Mechanized Infantry Regiment. Upon his arrival to the simple inauguration ceremony, he was received by Brigadier Kavinda Balasooriya – Commander Mechanized Infantry Brigade and Brigadier Anura Abeysinghe – Centre Commandant Mechanized Infantry Regiment.
During the event, the Deputy Chief of Staff had interaction with land owners and villagers. He briefed them on the Army's commitment and how the Army could join hands with the agricultural sector to reach national goals and multiply food production process through immediate cultivation of abandoned paddy fields.
Staff Officers and Other Ranks of the Mechanized Infantry Regimental Centre also enthuthiatically took part in the day's event.
