ARMY WAR COLLEGE HOSTS GUEST LECTURE ON LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES FOR SENIOR AND JUNIOR COMMAND COURSES
The Army War College, Buttala, hosted a guest lecture on “Leadership Challenges” on Friday, 22 May 2026, delivered by Major General W B M K G K Weerasekara WWV RWP RSP USP AUSWC psc, a highly decorated Senior Officer, currently serving as Colonel of the Regiment Special Forces and General Officer Commanding of 22 Infantry Division of the Sri Lanka Army.
The lecture was organized for the Student Officers of the Senior Command Course 17 and Junior Command Course 36. The audience included Student Officers from the Sri Lanka Army and Navy, along with Foreign Students comprising one Officer each from the Australian Army, Pakistan Army and Maldives Defence Force. The session aimed to provide practical insights into the demands placed on military leaders in combat and the principles required to meet them effectively.
Drawing on his operational experience from Sri Lanka’s 30-year conflict against LTTE terrorism, Major General Weerasekara illustrated how leadership directly shapes morale and outcomes in high-intensity operations. He emphasized that while soldiers are motivated by basic needs such as food, salary and leave, victory mostly depends on the inspiration and direction provided by their leaders. During the subsequent question and answer session, he addressed queries from the Student Officers and reiterated the key areas essential for effective leadership under current operational conditions.
At the conclusion of the lecture, the Commandant of the Army War College, Major General DKRN Silva RSP USP psc, presented a plaque to Major General W B M K G K Weerasekara WWV RWP RSP USP AUSWC psc as a token of appreciation for his commitment and participation. The event was attended by the Commandant, Chief Instructor, Senior Instructors, Head of the Academic Wing, Directing Staff, all faculty members and permanent staff of the Army War College.
