ARMY WAR COLLEGE CRICKET TOURNAMENT TUSSLED ON THE PITCH CONCLUDES

The Army War College Cricket Tournament 1/2024 was one of the exhilarating events that showcased the talents and sportsmanship displaying skills, camaraderie and competitive spirit with a series of 15 matches played among 14 teams. Matches were scheduled in evenings allowing both players and spectators to actively participate without obstructing their regular studies and duties.

The tournament featured a diverse range of teams, including one team from the Permanent Staff, two teams from the Defense Studies Branch, six teams from the Junior Command Course (JCC), three teams from the Senior Command Course (SCC) and two teams from junior Staff Course (JSC). All teams brought their unique skills and strategies to the encounter for making every match an exciting spectacle.

After heated competitions on the pitch, three teams emerged as the top contenders for the title. permanent staff No 1, JCC Team No 1, and JCC Team No 3 exhibited their exceptional cricketing abilities and secured their places in the semi-finals.

The final match of the tournament took place on 27 January 2024 at the AWC playground. Major General Dinesh RWP RSP USP ndc psc, The Commandant of Army War College graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Chief Instructor, Senior Instructors, members of the faculty and permanent staff were present to witness the encounter.

In a closely contested match, permanent staff No 1 emerged victorious, scoring 129 runs. JCC Team No 1 put up a valiant fight but fell short, scoring 128 runs. The players displayed exceptional skills and determination, making the final match a memorable one.

Maj Thusiranga Mahawitharana was awarded the title of the ‘Player’ of the Series for his outstanding performance throughout the tournament. He scored a total of 105 runs and took 4 crucial wickets, proving to be a match-winner for his team.

Maj Maheed from Bangaladesh following JCC was recognized as the ‘Best Bowler’ of the tournament for his impressive feat of taking 5 wickets. Major Thusiranga Mahawitharana was selected as the ‘Best Batsman’ of the tournament for his remarkable achievement of scoring 188 runs.

Following the bestowal of accolades, both participants and spectators revealed in a delightful post-celebration entertainment at the open theatre AWC. The event included various entertainment activities for the Student Officers, providing a well-deserved break from their academic and training schedules. Student Officers and the whole staff of the AWC experienced an opportunity of breaking monotony amidst the continuous engagement in the courses.
