The Army War College Cricket Tournament 3/2023 was a thrilling event that showcased the talents and sportsmanship displaying skills, camaraderie and competitive spirit with a series of 12 matches played among 10 teams. The matches were scheduled in evenings allowing both players and spectators to actively participate without hampering their regular studies and duties.
The tournament featured a diverse range of teams, including one team from the permanent staff, two teams from the defense studies branch, five teams from the Junior Command Course (JCC), and two teams from the Senior Command Course. Each team brought their unique skills and strategies to the field, making every match an exciting spectacle.
After intense battles on the pitch, three teams emerged as the top contenders for the title. JCC Team No 1, JCC Team No 2, and JCC Team No 5 exhibited their exceptional cricketing abilities and secured their places in the semi-finals
The final match of the tournament took place on 28 September 2023 at the AWC playground. The Deputy Commandant Brigadier BPGK Balasooriya RSP psc graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and the Chief Instructor, Senior Instructors, members of the faculty and permanent staff were present to witness the thrilling encounter. The atmosphere was favourable as JCC Team No 5 and JCC Team No 2 battled it out for the championship.
In a closely contested match, JCC Team No 2 emerged victorious, scoring 93 runs. JCC Team No 5 put up a valiant fight but fell short, scoring 77 runs. The players displayed exceptional skills and determination, making the final match a memorable one.
Maj Aloka Bandara MIC was awarded the title of the Player of the Series for his outstanding performance throughout the tournament. He scored a total of 174 runs and took 2 crucial wickets, proving to be a match-winner for his team.
Maj Ranawaka GR was recognized as the Best Bowler of the tournament for his impressive feat of taking 5 wickets. Maj Ibulawala SR was selected as the Best Batsman of the tournament for his remarkable achievement of scoring 188 runs
After the trophy ceremony, the participants and spectators enjoyed a delightful post-session entertainment event at the open theater near the cafeteria of AWC. The event included various entertainment activities and games for the Student Officers, providing a well-deserved break from their academic and training schedules.
