JUNIOR COMMAND COURSE WINS AWC CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP 2023

Team No 02 of JCC 27 outplayed DS Team No 01 in the final match of the second trimester Cricket Tournament held at Army War College playground on 29 May 2023. Twelve teams including three teams from the permanent staff and nine teams from the Student Officers: two teams from SCC 08, five teams from JCC 27 and two teams from JSC 24 played for almost three weeks to reach the finals. Winning the semi-finals Team No 02 of JCC 27 and DS Team No 01 were qualified for the grand finals.

The Commandant of the Army War College, Major General YABM Yahampath RWP RSP ndu psc, participated in the event as the Chief Guest along with the Chief Instructor and the members of the permanent staff of AWC. The trophies and presents were given away at a small ceremony held at the end of the final match. JCC 27 Team 02 won the Championship comprehensively beating the mighty DS Team 01 and cornering them to be pleased with runner up trophy despite consolidating a huge total of 91 runs batting first. Opening the innings, Major Vimukthi Hapuarachchi of DS Team 1 scored 47 not out being the highest individual score of the tournament.

Major Gayantha Gunarathna psc SLSR of the DS Team 01 was adjudged the Player of the Series with his outstanding all-round performances and the best bowler of the tournament was Major PMSY Fernando and the best batsman was Major Palihakkara SLNG; both from JCC 27 Team 02.

The after session of the match included an array of entertaining events presented by the Student Officers. The cricket tournament of the Army War College is included in the course curriculum to break the monotony of the Student affairs as well as to promote team spirit and to evaluate their organizing skills.
