CONTRIBUTION TO FULFILLING THE WATER REQUIREMENT OF THE DIGANA AREA

Due to the prevailing high temperature weather conditions, the water level of the Mahaweli River has decreased significantly and as a result, the water pumping station (intake) operated by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, which is responsible for supplying drinking water to the general area of Digana, did not receive sufficient water. This situation caused severe difficulties in the distribution of water to the area.

Upon a request made by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and Government Agent (Kandy), under the direction of General Officer Commanding - 11 Infantry Division, immediate action was taken. A total of 01 x 45 troops, comprising personnel from the 6 Field Engineer Regiment, 5 (Vol) Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, and 1 Rifle Corps, were deployed for the task.

During the period from 07 to 11 April 2026, the troops constructed a temporary bund using over 5,000 sandbags. This effort successfully redirected water towards the pumping station (intake) area and thereby significantly contributing to meeting the water requirements of the people in the Digana area.
