On 19 March 2026 at approximately 1045 hours, information was received from the Senior Superintendent of Police, Nuwara Eliya, regarding an incident involving a 23-year-old female undergraduate of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo. The individual had reportedly fallen from the precipice at World’s End, located within the Horton Plains area under the Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat.
Following the notification, and in accordance with the directions of the Commander, 114 Inf Bde, a rescue team 02 x 04 troops from 3 (V) SLSR and 01 x 04 troops from the Commando Regiment was immediately deployed to the location
Demonstrating the prompt response and professionalism of the Sri Lanka Army, the rescue team reached the incident site within 45 minutes. The route to the location was extremely difficult and narrow, requiring approximately 5 km of foot movement from the entrance to World’s End to the observation point.
Upon arrival, the rescue team assessed the situation at the observation point, which overlooks a steep precipice exceeding 100 feet. Utilizing rope-assisted techniques, trained personnel successfully descended to the location of the casualty and carried out the rescue operation with precision and care. The injured individual was then evacuated on a stretcher over the same distance back to the entrance point and subsequently handed over to the 1990 Emergency Ambulance Service for immediate transfer to the Nuwara Eliya General Hospital.
The operation highlights the prompt response, professionalism, and effective coordination of the security forces and supporting agencies in executing a complex rescue mission under challenging conditions.
