GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING 59 DIVISION INSPIRES FUTURE LEADERS AT ARMY WAR COLLEGE

Major General MWS Millagala RWP RSP USP hdmc psc, General Officer Commanding of 59 Division, delivered a lecture on ‘Military Leadership’ at the Army War College (AWC) Buttala on 13 January 2026. The lecture, titled ‘Leadership Theories & Principles’, is a mandatory component of the course curriculum, and was attended by 146 Student Officers from the Senior Command Course 16 and Junior Command Course 35.

In his two-hour lecture, the General Officer Commanding shared insights and experiences from his 34-year military career, highlighting leadership styles, theories, principles, leadership qualities and offering valuable lessons on military leadership with practical examples for the Student Officers. Furthermore, Major General Shirantha Millagala highlighted the crucial role of a leader’s character, stressing that it is imperative for leaders to concentrate on and nurture the development of their character, as it impacts their effectiveness and influence. Thus, the thought provoking lecture, left a lasting impression on attendees and was hailed as captivating, underscoring its significance in molding the next generation of leaders.

Towards the end of the lecture, Student Officers got an opportunity to clarify their doubts and have a brief understand on the specific areas related to the subject.
