STUDENT OFFICERS EMBARK ON ‘EX-HISTORY WATCH’ TO EXPLORE THE HISTORICAL PLACES IN THE VICINITY

The student officers of Junior Staff Course (JSC 28) embarked on an enlightening excursion of ‘Ex-History Watch’, visiting some of Sri Lanka’s most significant archaeological and historical sites in the vicinity of Army War College on 12 February 2025. A total of 36 student officers participated in the journey. The Student Officers from friendly foreign countries representing India and Bangladesh who are presently following Junior Command Course (JCC32) also joined the visit thus gaining an international learning experience.

Firstly, the student officers made a visit to Katugahagalge Temple at Badalkumbura, an ancient site known for its historical and religious significance. From there, the group proceeded to Yudaganawa Temple, a place believed to be linked to Sri Lanka’s ancient battles and royal history.

Next, the officers visited the Buduruwagala Archaeological Site, famous for its massive rock-cut Buddha statues, showcasing the artistic and cultural heritage of the region. Continuing their journey, they also explored the Maligawila Buddha Statue, one of the tallest free-standing Buddha statues in Sri Lanka, reflecting the grandeur of ancient craftsmanship.

The destination of the excursion was Dembatamal Viharaya at Kumbukkana area; a serene, yet historically rich temple which bears evidence of history related to the era of Kind Dutugemunu. Throughout the journey, student officers had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and historical landscapes. The presence of Indian and Bangladeshi officers further enriched the experience, fostering cross-cultural learning and camaraderie.

This excursion not only reinforced academic knowledge but also provided an experience of Sri Lanka’s glorious past, making it a memorable and educational expedition for all participants. Having actively associated with sightseers, the Chief Instructor elaborated the archaeological and historical values connected with chronical perspectives of the sites visited. Head of the Postgraduate cell, Senior Instructor of JSC and Directing Staff participated in the excursion with Student Officers of JSC 28.
