Major General D K R N Silva RSP USP psc formally assumed duties as the 8th Commandant of the Army War College (AWC), Buttala, on 05 January 2026, during a brief yet dignified ceremonial event.
On arrival at the main gate, the new Commandant was accorded a Guard Turnout and warmly received by the Deputy Commandant along with Senior Officers of the College. Thereafter, following the observance of religious formalities, Major General Kaminda Silva officially assumed duties by signing the relevant documents at the auspicious time, signifying the acceptance of his new appointment.
Following the assumption of duties, the new Commandant posed for an official group photograph with the Faculty and Staff of the Army War College. To celebrate the occasion, he planted a White Sandalwood (Tantalum album) sapling within the College premises, signifying growth, continuity, and sustainability in professional military education.
Addressing all Officers and Other Ranks at the Main Auditorium, Major General Kaminda Silva expressed his confidence in the collective strength of the Faculty and Permanent Staff and underscored the vital role of teamwork, discipline, and professional excellence in fulfilling the vision, mission, and strategic objectives of the Army War College. He further highlighted the importance of innovation, academic rigour, and leadership development in shaping future military leaders in line with contemporary security challenges.
The ceremonial proceedings concluded with an All Ranks’ Tea, organised as a gesture of welcome and camaraderie, providing an opportunity for informal interaction between the new Commandant and the personnel of the College.
