S/513841 CPL SURANGA PN PWV

S/513841 Corporal Suranga PN was awarded with the Parama Weera Vibusana Medal for his un-matching act of brave, heroic sacrifice in the face of enemy at a time when his comrades were greatly endangered.

On 13 August 2006, S/513841 Corporal Suranga PN was manning a Rocket Propelled Gun during an operation conducted to capture terroris's positions in Muhamalai area. The troops advanced from own positions and were faced with heavy resistance. The fighting power became redundant and the troops were ordered to withdraw back to former positions. Troops were withdrawing when terrorists launched a massive counter attack.

S/513841 Corporal Suranga PN was holding a position and later became untenable as his rockets and ammunitions stocks ran dry. The terrorists were about to take a break in the defence line. This Non Commissioned Officer clearly saw the danger looming over situation and decided to stop the onslaught at the cost of his life. He jumped on to the group of terrorists and blew himself with a grenade destroying the terrorists completely, thus saving the of his comrades.

For this selfless, heroic sacrifice S/513841 Corporal Suranga PN of the 1st Battalion Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment was awarded the country’s highest gallantry award the Parama Weera Vibushanaya Medal.
